4. The Disassembly of the Bombs on Very Low Altitude Barrage Balloons

Bomb H.E., A.A.D., No.4 Mark IV

Disassembly of the bomb and detachment of the stabilising parachute unit must proceed simultaneously.

1.Screw in the safety plug and remove the bomb from the flying wire assembly.

2.Unscrew the arming pin from the arming pin extension. Lift up the arming pin to prevent rubbing off the shear wire.

3.While the bomb is held in a vertical position with the firing pin ring uppermost, unscrew the knurled ring and remove the percussion unit from the magazine. If the bomb is loaded, remove The detonator.

4.Remove the Sealing Washer and the Felt Washer from the magazine holder. Loosen the Jubilee clip, and withdraw the bursting charge, if it is of the removable type.

5.Slide the Jubilee clip off the split skirt. and withdraw the magazine holder from the stabilising parachute. The lid of the parachute container should be held firmly to prevent it severing from the body at the weak point.

6.Detach the magazine holder from the stabiliser strop by untying the larks head knot.

7.Unscrew the firing pin housing and remove the firing pin and the firing pin spring from the firing pin housing.

8.Remove the swivel and firing pin ring by unscrewing the swivel housing from the swivel housing cup. Remove the swivel housing cup from the firing pin housing.

9.Unscrew and remove from the percussion unit the four screws which retain the time ring assembly and remove the time ring assembly. The time ring assembly has no function with the bombs used in the American barrage balloons .

10.Withdraw the small anvil from its recess at the end of the shutter guide channel. Prying the anvil base with a screwdriver if necessary. The anvil has a hole through it to accommodate a primer. The primer has no function in the bombs used in the American barrage balloons, but a dummy primer must be inserted to position the shutter when the arming pin is withdrawn.

11.Remove the shear wire from the arming pinhole. Slide the shear washer off the arming pin. Withdraw the arming pin and the shear collar from the shutter spindle. Remove the shutter spindle washer.

12.Unscrew and remove the safety plug and washer. Invert the percussion unit and catch the shutter and shutter spring as they fall out of the shutter guide channel. Remove the shutter spring from the shutter spindle.

13.Remove the safety pin from the percussion unit by inserting a small diameter rod into the safety plughole and pushing the safety pin until it can be lifted out. Remove the spring washer from the safety pin.

Bomb H.E., A.A.D., No.6-A Mark II

This bomb is made with rolled joints and cannot be disassembled.

The procedure for detaching the stabilising parachute from this bomb is the same as that described in 5 and 6 above.

Notes on Assembly of Bomb H.E., A.A.D., No.4 Mark IV

The assembly of the bomb and the attachment of the stabilising parachute must proceed simultaneously.

To assemble the bomb and attach the stabilising parachute unit proceed as follows:

1.Slide the safety pin spring onto the safety pin and the safety pin washer onto the shorter shank. Assemble the safety pin to the percussion unit so that the longer shank engages in the slot in the shutter guide channel, the shorter shank engages in the hole opposite the slot and the spring is compressed between the shoulder of the safety pin and the shutter guide channel.

2.Slide the shutter spring onto the shutter spindle and place the shutter in the guide channel.

3.Screw the safety plug washer Into the body until the plug engages with the safety pin. Push the shutter along the guide channel so as to compress the spring. When the hole in the wall of the shutter is opposite the slot in the shutter guide channel, screw in the safety plug until the safety pin is fully engaged with the shutter.

4.Slide the shutter spindle washer and the shear collar onto the shutter spindle, ensuring that the chamfered end of the shear collar bears against the washer. Insert the arming pin so that its knurled end is towards the base of the bomb. Assemble the shear washer and shear wire to the arming pin.

5.Insert the swivel housing  cup into the firing pin housing and screw the swivel housing into the swivel housing cap with a firing pin ring inserted between the two.

6.Insert firing pin into the firing pin housing with the point exposed and slip the firing pin spring onto the firing pin. Screw the firing pin housing onto the percussion unit, ensuring that the firing pin sits over the collar provided for it.

7.Insert the anvil.

8.Insert the time ring assembly into the percussion unit so the small stud on the cover engages with the slot in the shutter guide channel. Be sure that the stud does not engage the primer hole in the shutter. Secure the time ring assembly with the four screws.

9.Slide the Jubilee clip onto the magazine holder beyond the ridge. Attach the stabiliser strop to the to the lug on the base of the magazine holder with a lark’s head. The stabiliser strop must be handled carefully, since undue tension on the strop may break the weak joint between the lid and the body of the parachute container. Check to see that the rubber sorbo is in position at the base of the spit skirt.

10.Coil the stabiliser strop into the stabilising parachute container through the central hole in the lid. Place the parachute container against a firm level surface with the weak end up and push the magazine holder into the split skirt so the ridge on the magazine holder registers in the groove with the split skirt. While inserting the magazine holder ensure the stabiliser strop is not trapped between the base of the magazine holder and the rubber sorbo ring of the stabilising parachute container.

11.Slide the Jubilee clip into position against the outer ridge on the  split skirt with the clip screw diametrically opposite the arming wire hole. Tighten the clip until the magazine holder cannot be rotated by hand inside the split skirt.

12.Insert the bursting charge in the magazine holder ensuring that the detonator cavity is exposed and place the felt washer on top of the charge.

13.Smear Luting on the leather sealing washer, the magazine holder flange and the knurled ring. Place the seating washer on the magazine holder flange and secure the percussion unit to the magazine holder by screwing up the knurled ring. Be sure that the arming pin is opposite the arming wire hole in the parachute container.

14.Make a loop in the arming wire and screw the arming pin into the arming pin extension. The arming pin must be lifted slightly to prevent rubbing off the shear wire.
